The Fliedner University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf (FFH) is rooting from a social and educational institute within the Kaiserswerth Diakonie, and today looks back on over 180 years of history in the nursing and educational sector. The Diakonie’ s social care mission was started in the mid-19th century by Theodor, Friederike and Caroline Fliedner as a mission to provide training for people in social and healthcare related careers.

Since then, the Kaiserswerth Diakonie has developed into a well-known training location in the field of social and healthcare related careers. Through the work of encouraged deaconesses abroad, the mother house of the Kaiserswerth Diakonie internationally gained an immense acknowledgement for their educational standards between the years 1851 and 1975.

Deacons and deaconesses from other countries even came to Kaiserswerth to learn about the “Kaiserswerth model”. After their return, they would implement their findings into the individual context of their home countries. Since 1861 there were attempts to standardise the work and training of the deaconry which found expression in the work of the Kaiserswerth General Conference and, today, in the Diakonia World Federation.

Today many historical places to which Kaiserswerth deaconesses were send to were given up and locations established abroad have become independent in their unique national contexts. However, Kaiserswerth is still acknowledged as the historical place of origin for international mobility.

Since its foundation in 2011, the Fliedner University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf has continued the development of vocational training in health and social care aiming towards the academisation of social and healthcare careers. While this path can be directly linked to the above mentioned roots, the FFH is prepared to meet to the expectations of international developments in higher education.

Today, the environment of the Kaiserswerth Diakonie offers an excellent starting point for practical oriented studies. The Kaiserswerth Diakonie is a large-scale social institution and has its own hospital, social services facilities and numerous facilities for professional training. It also offers pre-schooling facilities and regular education. In 2019, the Fliedner University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf offers its 1,500 students with divers social, religious and professional backgrounds the possibility to gain an academic degree in the demanding field of health, social care and educational work.

The diversity of the students is the big potential of the Fliedner University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf.

The internationalisation strategy links both to the roots of the Diakonie and the present situation, with the University establishing itself as a place for practical study in the social and healthcare field within a densely populated region.

Following three focal points of the internationalisation strategy should be mentioned explicitly:

Tradition: In the selection of the regions and therefore partner institutions (which are considered for international mobility of students) the University follows the existing links and contacts of the sisterhood of the Kaiserswerth Diakonie in the EU and beyond (Norway, Sweden, Spain, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, Brazil, Indonesia, Palestine, Jordan and the USA).

Innovation: In the European countries the academic path of professional training in social and healthcare careers is already well established. Particularly in English speaking countries, like the Netherlands and Scandinavia, but also in Austria and Switzerland, there exist approved and innovative study courses and well established scientific programmes. With the German approach of professional training both sides can benefit by exchanging experiences, mainly for innovative purposes. In the European cross-border cooperation, it is the nearby Dutch universities that are of main interest.

Diversity: With its internationalisation strategy the Fliedner University of Applied Sciences Düsseldorf also wants to take its students’ diversity into account by offering students the possibility to carry out courses of study or internships in countries of origin of migrant communities. By doing so, language skills students already have can be used and enhanced during course of study.
